The announcement was made by Rwanda’s Minister of Natural Resources, Stanislas Kamanzi, on October 3, 2013.
According to Hon. Kamanzi, construction materials which can be used in their primary state or processed include amphibolites, granites and quartzites, volcanic rocks, dolomites, clay, kaolin, sand and gravel.
“In recent past few year, much more emphasize was put in Gold exploration where several big companies came in and identify the gold potential found in Rwanda,”said Hon. Kamanzi.
“These big companies include TransAfrica, EMR resources, ROGI mining, Precious mining, Corevale Rwanda Limited.”
Adding that most of these companies have preliminary promising prospecting results and it is expected to have results of reserves estimations before the end of the next year.
Traditionally, gold has been explored by local artisans with low production in Rutare, Miyove and Nyamiyaga located in Gicumbi and in Nyamasheke district, leading to law production due to poor traditional mining methods they were using.
ROGI mining which is at the exploration advanced stage will publish reserves estimates and the program of gold exploitation which will depend on the available Gold deposit
Key minerals being mined in Rwanda and traded are: Cassiterite – a tin ore); Colombo-tantalite commonly called Coltan – an ore that is the source of niobium and tantalum); wolfram –a tungsten ore); and Gold mined from Gicumbi and Nyamasheke districts.
Other key minerals include ambrigonite, beryl and semi precious stones such as tourmaline, topaz, corundum, chiastorite, amethyst, sapphires, opal, agate and flint.
Rwanda is geographically located in the rift valley region where mineralization end results is a huge potential in mineral deposits which are attracting several big companies to invest in exploration and exploitation of the huge potential found also in all rift valley countries like DRC, Uganda Tanzania, Kenya,
