Rwandair the national carrier introduced a new direct flight from the capital Kigali to Douala in Cameroon as the airline consolidates its presence in the African market.
The Douala route which adds up to the 16th destination was launched in Kigali on April 27, 2014.
According to the CEO of Rwandair John Mirenge the airline will later this year also commence flights to Abidjan while eyeing Mumbai as its second destination outside of Africa after Dubai and targeting to operate other 25 routes in the next five years.
Douala is RwandAir’s fifth destination in West Africa after Brazzaville, Libreville, Lagos and Accra.
The secretary general of Littoral region, Ludovic Ngwag where Douala city is located said that the route would open opportunities for both Rwanda and Cameroon.
Currently, RwandAir operates 7 new aircraft, 2 B737-800NG, 2 B737-700NG, two Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen and now the Q400 NextGen, which makes it the operator of one of the youngest fleets in Africa.
The airline also serves destinations such as Nairobi, Entebbe, Mombasa, Bujumbura, Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg, Kilimanjaro, Dubai and Juba including one domestic.
